What Happens When a Physical Product Becomes a Platform?

A field note on turning connected objects into lasting relationships—with creators, retailers, makers, and the people who choose to keep them.

The short version

State of Stick, Co. began with a simple idea: make physical objects people want to keep. The larger opportunity appeared when those objects became a lasting way to connect a person with a story, place, product, or creator.

01 A meaningful object 02 An evolving experience 03 A returning relationship

We did not begin with a plan to build a global platform. We began in a workshop, making physical emblems.

We wanted each piece to feel more permanent than ordinary promotional material—something a person might display, collect, give, attach to something meaningful, or keep simply because the object itself had value.

Then the idea expanded. The physical piece could carry a story. It could connect someone to a product, a place, a creator, or a future experience. It could stay useful after the first interaction. That thinking became Persistent Retail™ and StickLink™.

The object is the beginning. The relationship it makes possible is the platform.

The best ideas will not come from a vacuum

A specialty retailer knows what customers ask at the counter. A chef knows why a recipe becomes part of someone’s life. A manufacturer knows what can be produced beautifully and reliably. An artist knows what makes an object worth keeping. A community knows which stories deserve to be carried forward.

State of Stick, Co. brings the physical product system, connected layer, design process, and platform. The right collaborators bring lived experience, audiences, stories, distribution, and worthwhile problems.

The opportunity lives where those abilities overlap.

From the workshop A platform still has to begin with an object worth noticing.

One collection, from idea to experience

Consider a curated collection made with chefs, culinary creators, or food brands. A physical emblem might begin with a signature dish, ingredient, kitchen philosophy, or personal story.

The object would be collectible on its own. A tap could open the chef-approved recipe, a preparation video, an ingredient guide, a limited release, a charitable campaign, or the next chapter in the collection.

The chef would not simply place a name on another piece of merchandise. They could shape the recipe, story, visual direction, and reason someone wants the next piece. A specialty retailer could give the collection a home beside ingredients, cookware, tastings, and gift sets.

Concept in development

The Curated Chef Collection

A chef-led story becomes a collectible object, a useful connected experience, and a reason to return.

  1. Create the storyA recipe, technique, ingredient, memory, or signature dish.
  2. Shape the objectA premium physical emblem designed as part of a recognizable series.
  3. Open the experienceThe official recipe, video, story, release, or selected destination.
  4. Give it a homeSpecialty shops, gift sets, events, tasting rooms, and online releases.

This is an early concept, not an announced chef partnership. We are beginning thoughtful collaborator outreach.

That same model could support artists, athletes, museums, tourism destinations, local storytellers, product designers, nonprofit causes, and cultural organizations. Each collection still needs its own reason to exist.

The goal is not to attach technology to everything. It is to create physical objects worth keeping—and use the connected layer only when it makes them more useful, meaningful, verifiable, measurable, or alive.

What we can prove today

State of Stick, Co. is early, but it is no longer only an idea.

Bounded public demonstrations give us a place to bring those pieces together. Visitors can interact with the work, understand the connected layer, and see how objects, stories, supporters, and digital experiences can behave as one system.

We are careful about the language we use. We have active concepts and outreach—not a finished global network, and not announced relationships with chefs or brands. Building in public should make the work easier to trust, not make the company sound further along than it is.

A partner should gain something real

The best collaborators bring more than a check. They bring a use case, point of view, audience, place to prove the system, manufacturing knowledge, equipment, materials, content, visibility, or operating support.

They should also receive something concrete: a distinctive product, a better customer experience, useful insight, a new revenue opportunity, a credible public story, or a strategic capability that matters to their future.

01

Brands + retailers

Put an early connected product or experience into a real customer journey.

02

Creators + storytellers

Give a collection cultural authority, a human point of view, and a reason to exist.

03

Makers + technology teams

Strengthen quality, capacity, infrastructure, and the bridge between object and experience.

04

Launch supporters

Help make the public proof visible, useful, and possible to experience firsthand.

Not every collaborator needs the same agreement or benefit. What matters is defining what each party contributes, what each receives, and what success looks like.

Protect the foundation. Open the doors.

Building with partners does not mean giving away the underlying company, technology, or customer relationships. Early collaborators can receive meaningful recognition, preferred opportunities, roadmap input, co-marketing, or clearly defined category roles while State of Stick, Co. protects the core platform and its ability to serve many industries.

The long-term version may include regional production partners, creator-led collections, specialty-retail networks, secure product identities, recurring platform services, and carefully governed partner programs.

State of Stick, Co. would not need to manufacture every object in one Michigan workshop. We would define the system, operate the connected platform, protect quality, support the network, and help turn more physical products into persistent relationships.

That is how a workshop becomes an ecosystem.
